Solitude, solace, consolation—

sun in its onlyness

shines on us here,

cups the heart in a deep blue bowl.

Courtyard radio. Swallows in pairs.

You’ll have to let everything go

but it stays, and stays,

and is connected:

straight white line—no wind—a plane

flying, in the mind, towards the sun.

The Cyclist

Here she comes, or here he comes—

her enormous head wobbling towards us,

his fat little legs pumping the pedals . . .

They say her skin is whitening,

that she is losing her downy hair—

every day he grows younger:

soon he will be nothing,

soon there will be white light,

unnatural calm, a terrible thirst,

flowers to crush in her miniature fists,

days when the bike says ‘hyacinth’

and then the chain comes off.

A long wait. No time to waste. Look—

he is pressing down on the pedals,

stretching the skin of the world.
